BIODIESEL producer SWB Cymru Ltd has ceased trading and Alistair Wardell and Nigel Morrison of Grant Thornton UK LLP, 11-13 Penhill Road, Cardiff, CF11 9UP has been appointed as administrators of the company. Their appoinment came into effect on December 29th, 2008.
SWB Cymru created biodiesel from waste vegetable oil and was among the first companies to bring biodiesel to Wales on a commercial basis. The plant had a potential capacity to produce 10 million litres per annum and would have been by far the largest biodiesel producer in Wales.
The company was forced to go into administration after difficult market conditions were encountered during 2008. During the first eight months of 2008, the price of used vegetable oil which is the main raw material increased by over 200% and made it not viable to produce biodiesel on a commercial basis. Numerous other UK producers have faced a similar fate during 2008. The directors and the administrators are actively looking for a buyer for the business.
